Mayo Tsz Yan
Carys Mayo is a Hong Kong-based artist, who specialises in ink art. Influenced by Yin Yang aesthetic concepts and existential philosophical ideas, she explores the languages of traditional Chinese painting and its happenings in the contemporary context. Her practice eliminates the material boundary of traditional ink art, embracing multiple materials including linen, tissue paper, and silk stockings. Through her unique perspective, Mayo aims to unlock the hidden emotions and unspoken stories that lie beneath the surface of everyday objects. By shedding light on the depths of the human subconscious, she invites viewers into a world of introspection and self-discovery. Her works evoke a profound sensory and emotional resonance.

On a log chopping board, the head of a roast goose lies alongside a cleaver and towel, manifesting a grimace of pain. The form of a greasy, roasted goose carries a detestable male figure in the artist’s memory. This painting is an execution of the man, which was inspired by the episode of Judith Slaying Holofernes, recounting the assassination of the Assyrian general Holofernes by the Israelite heroine Judith.

A rabbit stared at the white, flat, collage of milk sea behind him, and his face showed fear. The word “sea of milk” comes from "Blindness" by the Portuguese writer José Salamago, which is used to describe the feeling after blindness. The blindness in the book is contagious, so the patient is isolated in an abandoned mental hospital, which makes people in the city panic and restless.

A roast goose hangs in the middle of the picture, with a cutting board, dishes, and side dishes in the background, forming the prophecy of the roast goose. Upon closer inspection, the plate reflects the scene inside the train carriage, with handles and faint silhouettes, pointing to an unpleasant experience on the subway.
