This project explores the complexities of heritage, sense of belonging and how people who have been dispersed from their homeland cope with them. Highlighting the common thread of connections each person develops throughout their life with their surroundings and people they meet, creating their own sense of belonging. In this project, I specifically explore my relationship with the women in my family and their impact in the shaping of my own persona.

The creation of “I Could Fill a Whole Garden” drew inspiration from May Fung’s “She Said Why Me” (1989), which was a reaction to the atrocities that occurred during the Tiananmen Square protest in the same year. Fung’s work examined the role of women in society and politics. ” Could Fill a Whole Garden ” is a tribute to the victims of feminicide in Mexico who have been disregarded by the government and reduced to mere statistics. The number of women who are killed each year continues to climb, with 10 lives lost every day. The flower petals symbolize each life lost, with some petals bearing the stories of the victims. The varying states of the petals represent the ongoing issue women face every day, with a new case added every day and some that remain unresolved or overlooked. At this rate, it is possible to fill an entire garden with the names and stories of these victims.
