ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Cai Jiayu

Alexia Cai employs calligraphy as her primary medium for personal and introspective expression. In a digital age that increasingly overlooks handwritten uniqueness, she values calligraphy's physicality, focus, and quiet solitude, using it to preserve her authentic voice and original intentions. Her past works take the form of time-spanning messages to herself, blending vernacular emotion with classical textual aesthetics to explore memory, self-reminder, and unchanging sincerity.

Informed by artists including Xu Bing, Alexia reflects on text as both deeply personal and socially resonant. She seeks to revitalize traditional calligraphy by experimenting with digital media, interactive forms, and narrative structures, challenging its conventional rigidity. Her practice bridges cultural heritage and contemporary expression, inviting audiences to reflect on identity, persistence, and the enduring power of written language.

Speaking just to listen myself

In an era swept along by the flood of information, conformity has become the safest and most complacent way to survive. People gradually lose their individuality and inner selves amid the tide of the crowd. Drawing spiritual nourishment from Echo's Speaking just to listen myself, I retrieve and rediscover myself between confusion and awakening, holding fast to inner certainty and clarity, and pursuing a spiritual dwelling place of soul independence and freedom.

The future is filled with countless uncertainties. How do I keep my heart? I sincerely and desperately hope that my future self will always remember what my true heart is.

Time’s cracks run beneath the eaves,

Unspoken words lie buried in the tiles’ crevices.

Unseen traces, like shadows at the roof’s edge,

Yet still, intact, they gather humanity’s warmth.

The eaves fade white, wrapping untold truths.

What lies hidden from outsiders is more than shattered tiles

It is the heaviest truth, concealed in shadows,

The pain and grace pressed deep within our flesh and blood.

What remains unseen is not a flaw, but profound affection

The whole story revolves around a little girl who one day found a group of ants gathering. She wondered, "why?" She reflects on the fact that ants assemble to collect food, and ponders whether people similarly gather together because of the Internet. Gradually, she became addicted to the world of the Internet and lost herself. Then someone comes to her rescue and leads her to find the way to a brighter future.
