ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Kokoa Cheung works with experiential art and installation, focusing on handcrafted and physical forms. She is interested in exploring emotions related to memory, distance, and everyday experiences, and how tangible materials and sensory elements can be used to process personal reflection.
In her previous work, she has explored how emotional connections emerge through spatial encounters. By bringing together objects, sound, and space, she examines how viewers engage with the work through their bodies and senses. Her installations often grow out of everyday situations and social conditions, approaching social issues in an open and accessible way.
She pays attention to how viewers move, pause, and position themselves within a space, where distance, touch, and atmosphere shape the experience. Through her practice, she creates situations in which feeling comes before interpretation, allowing reflection to unfold gradually.
Kokoa Cheung

Group dynamics during growth often shape the individual in invisible ways. Using Alice in Wonderland as a metaphor, this installation explores my personal journey under the influence of the ‘Black Sheep Effect.
Each character symbolizes me at a different stage, embodyingspectatorship, anxiety, oppression, assimilation.
They exist in a fluid state—shifting between the oppressed, the bystanders, or even those who, under collective pressure, unintentionally participate in harming others.

In traditional Chinese stories, red beans symbolise longing and emotional connections. The red thread weaves the shared stories of the community together, transforming individual feelings into a collective artistic experience. Here, every sentiment converges and resonates.
Women often do not have a space to express themselves because they are frequently subjected to stereotypical roles in society. To gain acceptance, they often keep many of their desires hidden within their inner space.
The title Suffocation suggests a sense of being overwhelmed or constricted – a feeling that is often experienced when one’s personal space is invaded or disregarded. The central theme of this artwork is the exploration of female's psychological and personal space.
