張睿舫

Reon Cheung is a Hong Kong contemporary mixed-media artist. Born in 2001, currently, she is a Year 4 student studying Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. She participated in the Current Plans Exhibition in 2023 and the Times Square Exhibition in 2018. Her previous works mainly focused on sketching and oil painting. Cheung always draws something related to nature as she loves the beauty of the scenery and its atmosphere. Recently, she has been exploring themes of the Japan Tea Ceremony and became determined to convey its pure essence to the audience.

In order to broaden her horizons, Cheung began exploring different mediums during her studies at the University. By delving into various fields, Cheung has gained a shallow understanding of their development and discovered her potential. Throughout this process, she has learned about the requirements of different domains and discerned what suits her best.

I decided to focus on the "Wabi-sabi" spirit in the Japanese Tea Ceremony. In today’s society, many people strive for perfection and tend to compare themselves with others. For example, they may feel that despite their hard work, their grades are inferior to others, or that their appearance with makeup doesn’t measure up to others’ innate beauty. Even when traveling and enjoying life, everyone feels the need to share their experiences on social media, often forgetting to truly live in the moment and appreciate the present. It’s important to remember that our lives don’t need constant validation from others. While sharing is fine, it’s essential to focus on the present, cherish the people and things around us, and experience true happiness. Therefore, I hope to inspire a change in mindset for everyone. The true essence of happiness lies in contentment and gratitude for what one currently possesses. It involves seeing oneself as a part of nature and accepting its imperfections. It is through embracing our imperfections that we can experience further growth and development. By eliminating pretenses and returning to a state of purity, one can find satisfaction and truly live. I hope that my work can allow people to feel the tranquillity present in life and reflect on what they truly seek in their journey. Everyone has the right to experience happiness, and I hope that everyone can reflect on their own lives in the right direction. It’s important not to let others dictate our own path and to find the kind of happiness that resonates with us.

DAWN

2022

Oil on canvas

40cm x 50cm

Bringing forth hope with the arrival of each dawn, while emphasizing the significance of cherishing the present moment. The arrival of each dawn carries the assurance of a fresh day, brimming with potential and chances waiting to be seized. It serves as a reminder that regardless of the difficulties faced in the past, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow. The captivating beauty and transience of the dawn evoke a sense of hope and tranquillity, prompting us to embrace and cherish the small pleasures and wonders of life, even amidst turbulent or uncertain times.

BLOOMING

2023

Oil on canvas

40cm x 50cm

The petite blossoms are bursting forth with remarkable vitality. Flowers teach us the valuable lesson of embracing our own uniqueness. They don’t compare themselves to other flowers or try to imitate them; instead, they bloom in their own distinct way, showcasing their individual beauty. By observing flowers, we can learn to appreciate and celebrate our unique qualities, talents, and strengths without comparing or imitating. Just as each flower adds to the diverse tapestry of nature, our individuality contributes to the richness of the world around us.
