My work focuses on exploring gender dynamics, including the male gaze, heteronormativity, and diverse gender identities. I primarily use video as my medium, with occasional short films that further examine these themes.

Growing up in an all-girls college, I experienced moments of gender role confusion during adolescence. This pivotal period shaped my understanding of societal expectations and planted the seeds for my current focus on gender issues. Transitioning into a world where men were actively present introduced me to new challenges and perspectives, sparking my curiosity and deepening my exploration of gender equality.

By observing how individuals of different genders interact, I have come to confront a range of complex and mixed emotions surrounding these dynamics. These experiences fuel my creative practice, pushing me to continue investigating the intricacies of gender relationships through my art.

The girl in the video is fully aware that she is being filmed, just as we are all conscious of living under the gaze of others—be it from pedestrians, society, or even the audience itself. Many of us strive to present ourselves in a certain way, but do we ever stop to question what defines “beauty” or what it means to “look good”? While I am not claiming that all aesthetics are shaped by the enduring influence of the male gaze, we cannot ignore its presence or the impact it has had over time. In this video, she is the subject, yet as the audience watches, they, in a way, take possession of her image. So, who holds the power now? Who is truly the subject?

Content Translation in her phone:

  1. Does anyone want to eat with me today?

今日有冇人同我食茶記?

  1. Why do Hong Kong girls nowadays like to eat expensive food? I guess I’m just different—I'm fine with eating anything.^^

點解宜家啲香港女仔咁鐘意食貴嘢?我就唔同,同我出街食咩都得^^

  1. I want to watch a football match, but why don't many girls like it? Does anyone want to watch with me tonight?

好想睇波,但係點解咁多女仔都唔鐘意睇。今晚有冇人同我一齊睇?

Single-Channel Video, 2024, 2mins26s

A video based on male gaze and script adapted from ‘Kafka on the shore' by Haruki Murakami and was impressed by some male gaze passages. The audience may have to think more behind it as it is not just about the passage. Why are both males and females impressed by the same sentence? Why do all the males roleplay the characters of boys while they have other options? Comparing the answer from different genders, girls tended to feel that it reached a certain level of erotic and nudity while the boy tended to feel it as reverie, desire and reality. It seems that they are feeling less offended or totally unbothered. The differences between their answers is an interesting yet important view to delve into. ‘Male gaze' is obvious but at the same time too natural in daily life and in everyone’s mind.
