ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
藝術家簡介
Romy Eom is a contemporary artist working with ceramics and traditional Korean craft techniques. Her work explores themes of family, memory, and emotional connection that transcend time and distance. By combining Moon jar and Na-Jeon (mother-of-pearl lacquerware), it captures personal experiences and cultural backgrounds together. The main element of the work is the moon jar, a traditional Korean ceramic form. She uses the moon as a symbol of constant presence and quiet support, inspired by her family. The soft and round moon jar shows a sense of stability and persistence while leaving room for viewers to project their own meaning.
She uses the Na-Jeon method of attaching small pieces of mother-of-pearl one by one. This slow and repetitive process reveals patience, sincerity, and the accumulation of time. The surface created by stacking mother-of-pearl reflects light softly, showing the depth of presence and emotion that lasts for a long time. Through this work, she combines traditional materials and personal memories to present a modern, reinterpreted work from a personal perspective beyond the simple representation of traditional crafts. Currently, she develops her work through exhibitions and continues to explore ways of expressing time, memory, and emotional connection through materials and forms.

This work explores personal memories, family, and the accumulation of time by combining the traditional Korean moon jar and Najeon-chilgi (mother-of-pearl inlay). I used the moon jar as a symbol of quiet presence and emotional support, inspired by my family, who have always been there for me. Moonlight also became a metaphor for family in this work. Just like the moon always shines brightly wherever it is, my family is always there to support me and guide me through life, even in the darkness. Each tiny piece of mother-of-pearl was attached to the moon jar by hand, one by one, over 300 hours. This slow, repetitive process resembles the accumulation of time. The mother-of-pearl’s reflective surface shimmers differently with light and direction, evoking the soft glow of moonlight. By combining ceramics with traditional craft techniques, I wanted to connect personal memories with traditional Korean culture to express a lasting emotional bond.
