The internet slang term fat hai (佛系) refers to a lifestyle attitude that emphasizes being easygoing, not forcing things, and maintaining a tranquil state of mind towards events. This approach to life embodies a kind of spiritual freedom where the heart remains calm regardless of external changes and one can always remain calm, like a temple unaffected by the outside world.
My art explores fat hai through the ceramic arts, embodying my emotional journey from seeking tranquility to embracing imperfection. Initially, ceramics offered a sense of relaxation and tranquility. However, the challenges of controlling the medium led to tensions, unexpected results, and pre-firing anxiety. I realized the need to relinquish attachment and accept imperfections, embodying the “just let it be” attitude.
Fat hai is visually represented in this series through expressionless, comforting forms, thus extending the concept from ceramics to life itself. These pieces serve as a reminder to seek inner peace amidst the chaos of modern life. I hope viewers will simply observe these tranquil forms without overthinking and hopefully experience a sense of calm and healing.

The inspiration for this creation comes from En Iwamura’s interpretation of ‘MA’ and my reflections on my own existence. Through this work, I hope to convey the importance of cherishing every moment in life and finding inner peace amidst the chaos.
