ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

藝術家簡介

Ho Ling Sum is an artist working across sculpture, mixed media, and community art. Beginning with a love of drawing and illustration during childhood, she once saw art chiefly as a vehicle for beauty. Formal study broadened that view: for Ho, art is also a prompt for thought, a spark for creativity, and a way to sharpen how we perceive the world.

Guided by the belief that each idea asks for its own form, Ho experiments with materials and processes — using site-sourced clays, wires, and other everyday objects alongside traditional techniques. This openness toward materials allows concepts to find their most resonant expression.

Her interests span from environmental awareness and social phenomena to intimate, lived experience. Attentive to the overlooked textures of daily life, Ho's works surface small, often unnoticed realities and invite the audience to pause, reflect, and reimagine the familiar. Rather than chasing pure realism, her works value process, dialogue, and the capacity of art to connect people with their surroundings and with one another.

Seduction and unease coincide: the glow rewards our finger even as it narrows our focus. Rapid, superficial intake crowds out sustained critical thought and steers us toward the comfort of the herd. Are we operating the circuit, or is it operating us? When the pathway lights up, will you step out of the flock, or keep moving with it?

The Value of Playgrounds

2023

Community art, mixed media, sketch books, ropes, paper, pens

Dimensions variable

In this community art project, I aim to investigate the interaction between park facilities and their users. I have provided art supplies and jump ropes in the park, offering both static and dynamic activities that are enjoyable and accessible to most children, whether individually or in groups. This setup not only fosters interaction among children of different races but also encourages adults to join in with children. The provided tools and park facilities empower children to unleash boundless creativity and imagination.

Growing Memoirs

2023

Mixed media, cement, lime, mud, leaves, branches, iron sheets, picture frames, clothes, cotton, wooden boards, film, ceramic dishes, rubber

30 x 30 x 3 cm (1 piece), 30 x 25 x 1.5 cm (2 pieces)

In my childhood, I lived on the outskirts of Tai Tong. Now, I reside in the city, a completely different environment. Tai Tong is filled with my childhood memories, and I cherish them deeply. To honour these memories, I have collected objects from my old house and the Tai Tong suburbs and created a collage to commemorate my childhood memories. The textures of these materials evoke memories tangibly. I collected mud, leaves, and items from the old house, assembling them into collages that depict the Tai Tong landscape, the living room of my former home, and my childhood room.

My Imaginary Partner

Performance art, video projection

The inspiration for this artwork comes from my campus life. While working on an art assignment, even though it was an individual task, I received help and support from a close classmate. Through this piece, I aim to portray the emotional connection between us by blending elements of reality and imagination. I plan to use projection technology to showcase our working environment and enhance the sense of presence within the artwork.
