Ho Wing Tung Tina
Ho Wing Tung Tina, who was born and raised in Hong Kong after the 00s, is young who loves drawing. She always gets inspiration from the scenery she sees, films and television programs, and books. Creating artwork is her way of expressing feelings.
She currently studies at Hong Kong Baptist University Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Visual Arts. Her artworks encompass painting, illustration, experience design, etc. To convey the concepts, she is good at transforming the form and medium of drawing, for instance, integrating performance art into improvisational drawing and exploring the mark-making of charcoal to express emotions.
Her artworks have been influenced by her Christian faith since secondary school. Her works often involve storytelling that induces deep thoughts. She believes that art transcends the barrier of language and physical constraint of objects, so that viewers can be led to a specific time and space through the artworks.

Digital drawing printing on canvas

Based on the theme of the fruit of Christian life, I drew this digital drawing of a tree under the wind and printed it on canvas. Fruit is a metaphor written in the Bible to describe the growth of a Christian. I was inspired by the tree in Kwun Tong Promenade, as I found the movement of the tree poetic on a windy day. I concentrated on the light and shadow of the tree and the chair and learned the treatment of light from the paintings of Claude Monet and George Shaw.

Charcoal and pastel
160 x 91.44 cm
There is a big cross and many sheep behind, one of the sheep had a different direction from the others. I was inspired by a Bible story ‘The Parable of the Lost Sheep’ in Luke 15:4-7. It is about Jesus saying that man has 100 sheep but loses one of them, when the man successfully finds the lost sheep, he is joyful. The lost sheep is the symbol of the repentance of a sinner to the Lord here. The mediums I used are charcoal and pastel and focuses on the mark-making of the sheep and the relationship between the sheep. For example, some heavy charcoal marks represent the movement of the sheep, and I used some straight lines to separate different sheep.

Digital drawing printed as book

After I watched a talk video uploaded by Para Site, one guest shared that he used to be taught by Antonio Mak in drawing positive and negative space, which let me understand more how the personality of Antonio Mak was when he was alive. He was passionate in exploring the relationship of man and the world. E.g. He used furniture, chair to be the ruler of human. Those artefacts are designed to serve and remind people the nature of man. Therefore, I created this story book without any dialogue, to respond to Antonio’s work and concepts. Shadow is the symbol of existence of subjects in the drawings. Moreover, I observed that Antonio was always thinking the relationship of man and the world, used furniture and animals to be parts of his works, seem to question different philosophical questions himself. I tried to imply my thoughts through light and shadow in this story, which are the basic elements in the World.
