ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

藝術家簡介

Hoi wai chi
許瑋芝

Hoi is a Hong Kong-based visual arts student and emerging artist working across installation, 3D printing, craft, and Chinese calligraphy. Her practice often explores memory, family, care, identity, and everyday social issues through tactile and participatory forms. She is interested in turning ordinary materials and familiar objects into meaningful experiences that invite reflection and emotional connection.

Hoi's works often combine sound, scent, text, and interaction, allowing the audience to engage physically and emotionally with the ideas behind the elements. Through both group and individual projects, she has developed an interest in socially engaged art, especially themes related to community, aging, family relationships, and overlooked voices in society.

In addition to her studio practice, Hoi is also passionate about art education and hopes to continue developing work that connects creativity with empathy, communication, and social awareness.

HONOURS PROJECT

畢業作品

Hong Kong Street Relics 香港街遺

Design/product design, mixed media

200 x 280 x 6 cm

HK Street Relics reimagines overlooked Hong Kong street safety objects as palm-sized 3D‑printed fidget toys, each housed in an illuminated lightbox. The series features local icons such as rubbish bins, safety island signs, traffic lights, bus bells and emergency buttons, translated into tactile forms that invite touching, pressing and holding. Each work combines a 3D‑printed frame, an LED backlight, a relief panel based on the artist's own street photographs and a single fidget object, turning everyday infrastructure into a small, glowing "street relic." By shifting urgent, high‑pressure safety devices into intimate stress‑relief objects, the project reflects on how Hong Kong's public safety systems quietly protect residents while many people live with chronic stress and attention difficulties. HK Street Relics proposes that utility objects can also become carriers of memory and emotional care and asks what it means to hold a piece of the city in one's hand.

Light in your heart

2024

Ink on xuan paper

20 x 20 x 30 cm

Using thin Xuan paper and Chinese calligraphy, this work presents comforting song lyrics, that steals away inner darkness and gently placing light into the heart. Illuminated from behind, the ink becomes translucent and warm, creating a mood that is both fragile and resilient. By surrounding the light source with these words, the piece offers quiet solace to a sad society, suggesting that even when the world feels overwhelmingly dark, there is always someone standing on the bright side, silently waiting and accompanying the viewer.

Smart Smart Fruit Shop

2024

Soft sculpture, textile, bean bags, mixed media

Dimensions variable

The work features a set of bean bags designed in the form and color of various fruits. Players, mainly elderly, are invited to select the correct "fruit" bean bags according to a given shopping list — a simple yet engaging game that helps stimulate memory and cognitive function, thereby reducing the risk of dementia. Additionally, the bean bags are weighted to allow players to practice muscle strength while playing.

Beyond the game, each bean bag also serves as a warm compress. When heated in a microwave oven, it can help relax muscles and relieve fatigue. This dual-purpose design encourages both mental and physical well-being, offering warmth and joy in daily life.

In Between

2026

Lights, ink on xuan paper, wood

52 x 40 x 2 cm

In Between explores the delicate space between emptiness and existence, sorrow and joy. Using a blend of regular and gold ink, the work symbolizes emotional transformation—with gold representing hope, renewal, and strength. Highlighted phrases such as "abundance," "joy," and "let go" invite viewers to reflect on their own emotions and discover the beauty and freedom that emerge from self-discovery.
