My name is Kwan Wai-Man, and I specialize in the art of Chinese calligraphy. In addition, I also create Chinese paintings and ceramics, with a primary focus on running script calligraphy. Currently, I am exploring the calligraphic style of Yan Zhenqing.

I excel at blending calligraphy with various media, such as integrating calligraphy with ceramics to create modern artworks. My aim is to convey the traditional beauty of calligraphy alongside the innovations of contemporary art, making this traditional craft more accessible to the public.

Calligraphy on wood

right to left: 86 cm x 18 cm x 5.5 cm, 80 cm x 20 cm x 6 cm, 59 cm x 28 cm x 4 cm, 66 cm x 23 cm x 4 cm

The wood grain silently narrates the passage of time; the ink permeates the timber’s depths with an imperceptible yet formidable force, embedding itself with profound depth.

"Craftsmen carve it; the brush penetrates three inches into the wood." This phrase beautifully encapsulates the elegance and strength of Wang Xizhi’s brushwork. Regardless, starting to write Chinese calligraphy

delinquent often leads me to doubt my abilities. Thus, I draw inspiration from "penetrating three inches into the wood," motivating myself to persevere, hoping that one day my skills will reach such depth.

The oak I use is native to Hong Kong, symbolizing my roots. Each piece retains its original form, representing a steadfast commitment to my ideals. This saying encourages everyone to pursue their dreams, master their craft diligently, and ultimately enjoy the fruits of their labor. I hope everyone can achieve their "three inches into the wood," or surpass it.

Life is full with disappointments and tragedies. Although it might not bring enduring bliss, alcohol might bring inexpensive exhilaration. One can temporarily forget about the ups and downs of the world, savour the present, and pursue instant gratification with a glass of powerful spirits.

The early morning rain washed away the light dust, and the raindrops hit the newly grown lotus leaves, giving the natural scenery a brand new look. The drizzle is as moist as butter. In the spring rain season, I always like to go out in the rain. When the raindrops hit my body, I felt as if my thoughts were also cleansed. The raindrops fell on the palm of my hand, I felt it attentively, and temporarily forgot all the unexpected things. Even when I watch the raindrops falling, I feel intoxicated by it. Therefore, I like rainy days, and this has become the theme of my creation. The work “Rain on New Lotus” mainly depicts the scene on a rainy day. The mist came with the sudden rain, and the raindrops fell slowly, gently hitting the rocks of the mountains, bringing a new look to nature.
