Lau Yee Yui Yiyi

Yee Yui Yiyi Lau is from Hong Kong. Her artistic practice focuses on exploring the relationship between humans and nature. Her inspiration comes from the pattern and surface texture found in the natural world, combining wood panels, oil paint, and mixed media to capture the subtle connections between the body and the environment. In her previous works, Lau has integrated traditional Chinese Gongbi techniques with contemporary forms of expression, using the woodgrain and the transparency of pigments as main elements of her pieces. Her work challenges the audience’s perceptions of authenticity in images and materials, prompting a reevaluation of essence and reality.

Oil and colour pencil on wood panel, integrated with birch branches

231 x 236 cm

The artwork explores a birch tree's journey from its organic origin to industrial plywood. Driven by a deep study of wood grain, my practice evolved through the lens of land art to examine the tension between industrial transformation and natural systems. The work sutures the disconnect between the tree’s raw state and its processed outcome. Using traditional Gongbi techniques and transparent oil paint, I amplify the natural grain, treating brushstrokes as living veins. By reuniting the plywood with its original limbs, I reconnect “skin” with “bone”. This work grants the material a second life, reflecting the repair between human intervention and natural vitality.

Oil paint, wax, and colour pencil on wood panel

120 x 70 cm

My work uses the snail as a metaphor to explore the subtle relationship between the body and medicine. The snail symbolizes the paradox of ointment—both healing and causing a sense of alienation and unease in the body. The piece reveals the blurred boundary between the body and external substance, expressing a dual discomfort and a struggle of both body and mind.

Burned mark on wood panel

20 x 20 cm

This artwork explores wood panels and animal textures, featuring three types of wood with distinct colors, textures, and thicknesses to create leopard patterns. Tools like a candle lighter and soldering iron were used, with a final layer of wood wax oil enhancing the grain and deepening the burn marks. The colors of the animal patterns allow them to blend seamlessly into the natural environment, creating an unexpected visual harmony.

I continue my study of animal patterns and experiment with burning techniques on different woods. The process creates unique, organic patterns that respond to the underlying texture, demonstrating my ongoing interest in working directly with material surfaces.
