ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Lee Ki Him (b. 2003, Hong Kong)

Graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University. Lee focuses on contemporary ink creation, covering landscapes, freehand characters and ink splashing experiments. Based on daily observation and deep reflection, its creation keenly captures the lurking fear in the social state and transforms it into a visual vocabulary. The work inherits the “vivid charm” of the traditional landscape, builds a sensory space that is both close and abnormal through the blending of pen and ink, and guides the audience to explore thepsychological landscape of contemporary survival between virtual reality.

Shadow of the mountain Demon

Colour & ink on paper

Set of 4: 100 x 36 cm each

These four ink paintings are named ‘The Shadow of the Mountain Demon', like a magic mirror that shines the abyss of the underworld, forcibly dragging the viewer into a latitude full of inscribable horror and absolute silence.

Creating an atmosphere with traditional hemp-fiber texture stroke and terrifying mountains and rocks with the monster elements of ribbons, ghost fire, lanterns and hair: the bondage of family and social responsibility; the spiritual consumption of overtime culture and labor; the anxiety of instability; the spread of emotions and pathology. This is not only an alien landscape, but also an irony of the collective spiritual breakdown and psychological alienation of urban people in the current high-pressure state of Hong Kong society.

The hunting and survival struggles faced by monsters and people in the old era areembodiments of the workplace in our modern society. Through these monsters, I express the psychological and spiritual direction of the current city people.

Japanese monsters are not only the legend of the strange power, but also a mirror, reflecting the human heart, the plight of society, and the imagination and fear of the unknown world. Lan Kwai Fong is a place with chaotic crowds and heavy 'Yin' energy, so it’s a gathering place for monsters. This time, the main object is painting Japanese monsters. I want to express the dark side of the human heart, using the characteristics and metaphors of different monsters to reflect the demons of human beings. Monsters can be said to be the masters of model harm, which is projected on various evils of modern society.

When we walk into the mountains and forests, thinking that we had escaped from the hustle and bustle of the city, did we ever think that this mountain originally had its own master? Those who lived here earlier than humans are now hiding behind the rocks, looking at you, the intruder.
