ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Cecilia Leung is a research-based Gongbi artist whose works are profoundly inspired by nature. She loves to explore the rich symbolism of plants, utilizing a research-based approach that allows her to delve into their cultural significance and historical meanings across different cultures. She believes that plants are not merely subjects of beauty; they are vessels of meaning and memory, each carrying stories that resonate with her own life experiences. Therefore, she uses them to convey her personal experiences and emotions, especially those related to her family.

Colour on Silk
200 x 300 x 40 cm
Whispers of Autumn is a journey of memory, loss, and healing, inspired by my grandmother’s passing. I used the symbolism of autumn—the season of change and reflection— to convey my grief and the process of letting go and remembrance. Nature serves as a powerful metaphor for the cycle of life, reminding us that there comes a time to release what no longer serves us. Each element in my artwork, from the tree stump to the deer by the lake, embodies complex emotions tied to remembrance. What memories might you wish to release?

Ink on Paper, 2024, 35 x 180 cm
Chrysanthemum is my birth month flower, it serves as the foundation of my narrative, symbolizing myself. I have been reflecting on my feelings after my grandmother’s passing, represented by the roses which symbolises love. It reminds me of my grandma who passed away last year because for the last Mother's Day I had with her, I bought her roses. This loss has brought my family closer together, filling our lives with more love, as symbolized by toadflax. The tulips remind me of the wonderful childhood I experienced, while wisteria represents my deep love for my family. Even in my younger years, represented by daisies, I was cared for by my mother, represented by carnations, traditionally representing mother's love, and my father represented by daffodils because my dad used to bring home this plant before Chinese New Year when me and my sister were small. I hold immense gratitude for their support, represented by hydrangeas generally represent gratitude. As I look to the future, I hope our family will continue to thrive in harmony like what lilies stands for, and love, carrying our dreams and aspirations wherever we go, like dandelions.
Shoushan stone seal, 2023, 1.5 x 5 cm
In my series, I explore the essence of coexistence—both in nature and within a family. The stamps themselves are a play on words, where the character “睦” (mù), is also the pronunciation of wood (木) in Chinese. Each seal stamp in this series reflects different parts of a tree. I created this series because to me, wood relates to nature and metaphorically family, just like 和睦共處 (Living in Harmony) can be related to both.
