Winny LI is born and raised in Hong Kong. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in reflections on life and spirituality. She is driven by a fascination with the essence of diverse artistic mediums, deconstructing and reassembling them to craft a distinctive visual language. In her works, painting, performance art, digital media, and installations converge to explore the nature of the creative act and its inherent absurdity. Through relentless experimentation and innovation, she aims to uncover the philosophical inquiries and existential explorations embedded within the artistic process, inviting viewers to engage in contemplative and dialogic experiences.

Optical quickening
光體胎動
Mixed media installation
混合媒介裝置
125cm x 47cm x 36cm
Through the flash of the bulb, through several panes of glass, we parted at the corner.
When we took shape, we met again on the wall.
This is our memory of the quickening.
閃過燈膽,穿透幾塊玻璃,在轉角的地方我們分別。
到時成為有了模樣的光線,在牆上相遇。
這是我們胎動的記憶。

In fact, I asked AI a lot of questions. I asked it what shape the pattern on the slide was so that it would become a square when projected, and it replied that it was too difficult.
The slide must be sensible and know that light and dust have nothing to do with it. To map it squarely, the fiery old machine thinks the most practical thing is to touch it.

Live performance with sound reactive installation, Nov 2024, 10mins, HKBU CVA
A performance piece where my voice triggers the rotation and deformation of a 3D Mandelbrot model. As I exhaust my breath, the model reverts to its original state. This process reflects the infinite yet finite nature of the Mandelbrot set, paralleling the endless journey of artistic creation and exploration.
Live performance, Nov 2024, 10mins, HKBU CVA
Titled “Robbie,” this work draws inspiration from Asimov’s writings and examines the profound relationship between artist and computer. Utilizing Python and TouchDesigner, it focuses on image processing, tracking my hand movements with MediaPipe. The distance between my typing fingers generates real-time sound effects through VCV Rack.
Live performance, Nov 2023, 15mins, HKBU AVA
This piece, performed in the showcase titled “Flat Rock,” is part of the course “Further Studies in Studio and Media Arts (Performance Studies)” led by Owen Boss. Named after a stone located behind the temple near AVA, the work embodies the dual sensations of comfort and danger I experienced as I approached the rock. The performance featured two wooden boards that supported each other, maintaining their balance despite their shaky appearance.
