Jack LUI is a Hong Kong visual artist and HKBUAVA graduate (2025) specializing in intricate, playful doodles that blend meticulous detail with surreal spontaneity. Though formally trained in painting, drawing, and digital media, he diverged from traditional academic paths to develop a self-driven doodling practice during his studies. His style—marked by patterns, hidden symbols, and fluid interplay of chaos and order—culminated in his honours project, The three pieces of work from his honours project which reimagined doodling as a meditative, intentional art form. Despite limited academic guidance, Jack's disciplined, mistake-free approach transforms impulsive strokes into cohesive narratives, earning recognition in movie elements, drama elements, and his surrounding spaces. Currently preparing his honours project, he plans to expand into larger pieces of work from his sketchbooks. Jack champions doodling as a profound visual language, asserting that "every line must be his perfections—there are no imperfections, only unexpected paths to perfection."

Ink & Markers on papers

Set of 3: 55.7 x 71.4 cm each

This work on paper series brings together elements from the artist’s daily life with an irreverent wit. The artist has been working on this series since the beginning of his undergraduate studies, unseen, but more aligned with his sense of purpose and expression than his regular coursework projects. Drawing from a much larger series of A4 works, these three panels, textiles, and sticker merchandise combine hidden elements, monsters, and coded symbols, linked by a self-deprecating humour. As the artist asserts: "The things we ‘don't have' are just empty spaces waiting to be filled with better stories." The artist considers these works as starting points for various forms of sharing and merchandise, and is highly interested in expanding into textiles, skate wear, and ephemera from various subcultures.
