ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Luk Yee Man Benjamin hails from Hong Kong. His art begins with his hands—he believes that hands are an extension of thought, and ceramics are the most honest recorders of thought.
In the process of shaping, sculpting, and polishing, every press and every touch leaves an unexpected mark. These “surprises” are not accidents, but rather a dialogue between hand and clay. For him, ceramics are not objects to be shaped, but bodies formed from the language of the hands.
His creative trajectory spans ceramics, woodworking, jewellery design, sensory installations, and mixed media. But no matter how the medium changes, the core remains the same: human vulnerability. He skillfully utilises the inherent characteristics of materials—the fragility of ceramics, the cracks in wood, the coldness of metal—to highlight weakness, breakage, and imperfection. Those seemingly hidden flaws become the most moving parts of the works.

A ceramic human body is used to symbolize the fragility of flesh and emotion. The metal nails scattered across act like cruel staples, attempting to mend cracks while inflicting new wounds. Each hammer strike adds pressure and fractures to an already vulnerable structure. This paradox reveals our longing to heal often turns repair into another form of injury. True recovery does not exist, we can only learn to live with scars, letting the nails serve as evidence that the wound has been, and always will be there.

In memory of my pet, I used his ashes to create this work and made one of his favourite toys.
A mask in which any facial expression triggers a mechanism that produces different sounds.
When light shines on the work, the mirror reverses and turns black. In the absence of light, the mirror is visible. This contrast reflects how we often turn away from people who try to care for us, only to find ourselves reflecting in solitude when no one cares.
