ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
With her practice spanning video art, photography and installation, Ng Wing Yan Winky investigates the intangible connections that are weaved through human relationships. She is particularly attuned to the subtle emotional shifts and bonds that often go unnoticed in daily life. Guided by this emotional awareness, her work explores states of detachment and the lingering presence of memory, examining how these unseen forces shape our perception and experience.
This sensibility is translated into spatial environments through a quiet, poetic language. She constructs contemplative installations that combine moving image and found objects, which often incorporate translucent materials such as glass to explore themes of visibility and ephemerality. Within these spaces, the elusive emotional threads between people, objects, and place are gently rendered palpable, inviting a shared moment of reflection.

A fishbone caught in my throat when I was little at the family table.
I swallowed hard, but it didn’t hurt.
Since then, every unsaid word has grown in its shape, murmuring just before speaking, folding the emotions between the people we love the most.

The artist has come to understand the discomfort of existing in a space that does not feel like home. This work reflects three years spent in her boyfriend’s house—an environment where the artist struggled to belong. By capturing the unsettling experience of nighttime routines, especially the vulnerability of going to the bathroom, she aims to convey feelings of unease and rejection, exploring the complexities of identity and belonging.
What is the “thingness” of an object?
Their identities are perpetually rewritten by time and environment.
When humanity codes apples as fruit, logos, or scientific data, we make ourselves deaf to their rotting whispers. Through old TVs and a live apple, the work poses the question: what is the essence of an object? Buddhism’s concept of impermanence reframes this question: if definitions are fictions, does the silence of matter speak truth? This installation is a courtroom where viewers stand trial as judge, perpetrator, and accomplice.
The project “Fathers” represents NG’s inaugural fine art photography endeavor, realized between 2023 and 2024. Initially conceived as a photobook, this work encompasses a diverse array of photographic techniques, including digital photography, instant photography, and staged photography. Through this project, NG explores her relationship with her two fathers-her biological father and her stepfather-each in distinct contexts.
