On Tsz Tung

On Tsz Tung was born in Hong Kong and works with painting and ceramics in recent years. Her practice is inspired by personal emotions and everyday life experiences. By observing daily surroundings and reflecting on social issues, she explores how small moments relate to broader contemporary concerns. Through a personal sense of humour, she transforms these ideas into works that invite viewers to connect and reflect. Incorporating natural imagery and personal perception, her work examines the relationship between people, the environment, and contemporary life.

With impulses to escape. In moments of anxiety and unease, imagining retreating into a "safe opening" — a gap, a hole, a temporary psychological shelter. Here, each fragment becomes a clue. They draw close, pull against one another, and sometimes drift apart, forming inner maps that trace incomprehensible emotions not yet fully spoken and paths still unfinished.

A set of 4: 35 x 18 cm each

This work attempts to extract interesting elements from the internet culture in my daily life as a source of inspiration and uses “zany and fun” throughout the creation. The title of the work “Gummy bears hiking picture” (熊仔糖行山行到腳仔軟)inspired by a username I saw in a public online discussion forum one day. It is really interesting and vivid, so I decided to use it as the theme of my creation.

I reinterpret traditional Chinese ink landscape painting through the perspective of contemporary popular culture. I tried to anthropomorphize the gummy bears, replacing the ancient people who were supposed to be mountain climbing, resting in pavilions, and rowing boats in the painting, and added more absurd actions and scencs. It seems cumbersome, yet it perfectly aligns with the quirky and unconventional style of the work. I also converted the gummy bears that gradually melted as they got closer to the sun as we climbed to the top of the mountain into a blue-and-green landscape, trying to incorporate ancient artistic conception and increase the interest of the painting.

I enjoy transforming the interesting and absurd things I observe in my everyday life into creative inspiration. Through my work, I hope to convey a unique sense of fun. In this tense and depressing social atmosphere, I believed that people really need is a moment of shared laughter.
