ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Pun Ka Man Carmen is a Hong Kong artist rooted in landscape painting. Her works explore themes of crowd loneliness and disconnection in the city’s urban landscapes, featured by thin oil paint and geometric landscapes. Carmen's paintings are drawn from photographs taken by herself after well-planned adjustment of composition, colours, and geometrization of the image. Her personal experiences during the pandemic starting in 2021 greatly influence her creations. She suffered from depression and health problems, leading her to start seeking and painting the scenes that can comfort people among the crowded and busy urban environment. She hopes to communicate with people by combining her personal experiences with the wider resonance of society. This auto-ethnographic approach fosters the reflection on shared feelings of disconnection and loneliness. By doing so, she aims to create a sense of connection and understanding, inviting viewers to explore their emotions in relation to the chaotic world around them.

‘The Block’ depicts the “Loneliness in the City”. Under crowded urban environments, emotional connections between people are rare, intensifying the feeling of loneliness.

The inspiration for “The Rooftop” comes from the alienation of people’s relationships after the epidemic. It depicts a quiet scene of buildings under soft sunlight, giving people a sense of peace and tranquility. Strong diagonal lines and geometric shapes make the painting more graphic. The painting demonstrates the artist’s approach to painting: rearranging the composition, cropping in close-ups, and simplifying details to create a flat perspective with muted tones. The thin brushstrokes of oil paint are clearly visible, enhancing the large, flat blocks of colour.

The artist wanted to create her own personal space through this series of paintings. These are scenes in her daily life that bring her comfort. The artist lives in a public housing estate with five family members. Despite being in such a crowded space, she always felt lonely. Feelings of loneliness can be even more intense, especially when people don't actually have spiritual connections with others. Some details are omitted in Crowds and Solitude to allow the audience to relate to the painting, as these scenes are common in Hong Kong.
Oil on Wood, 2024, 60 x 90 cm
The traffic light depicts an urban scene against a backdrop of repeating geometric tiles. This painting emphasises the interaction of light and shadow on the architecture. Artists have been looking for scenes that can bring comfort to people in the bustling city. The painting was based on a photograph taken by the artist himself. But what she wants to depict is not reality, but the image presented through adjustments in composition, perspective, detail and colour.
