ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Qi Jia yi

My artwork often focuses on individual narratives, exploring themes of emotional privacy, identity, and feminism through visual language. I am passionate about transforming the invisible oppression experienced during my growth into metaphorical visual poetics. My mediums of choice combine digital painting with printmaking, seeking to inspire critical reflection on gender norms and power dynamics through artistic creation.

See Myself Through My Own Perspective

1: The stench of blood and the throbbing pain accumulate layer upon layer,

I once thought that the scabs were the profound stamps of existence.

2: The superfluous things are squeezed into undulating hills,

There surges the stench of acidity, putridness, bitterness and the smell of blood.

3: The tides silently encroach upon the embankment of the womb,

And I am the battered and leaking solitary ship.

Looking back on myself who affirmed my own existence through physical pain and sensory experiences. The work uses the apple as a symbolic symbol. Taking personal physical memories as the entry point, it focuses on the “smell of blood”. It transforms physical pain and psychological burnout into visual language, and applies the Proust effect, attempting to construct the exclusive memories of the audience through external stimuli.

chaos

Risograph printing, 2022, 21 x 27.9 cm

The naked, huddled person and the chaotic background express my confusion and lack of confidence in my current state. The butterfly is a symbol of my yearning for freedom and beauty, and it face toward the melting sun, signifying that even though dreams are far away and the future seems uncertain, one must still try to blossom and fly.

The Möbius strip symbolizes integration and infinity. Hanging on it are wind chimes that symbolize peace and carry things related to happiness. The Morse code on the strip is “Freedom, Love”. Happiness is the foundation, while freedom and love are pursuits. The three are closely connected and cycle endlessly.
