ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Qi Yihuan is an emerging artist working within posthumanist discourse. Through sculpture and installation, she explores the dissolution of boundaries between body, technology, and environment. Juxtaposing disparate materialssoft and hard, organic and industrial, the sensible and the algorithmicshe constructs biomorphic, generative structures that reconceive the body as a system operating between cybernetics, entropy, and self-regulation. No longer a fixed natural entity, the body becomes an adaptive interface in constant reconfiguration, blurring the lines between materiality, technicity, and subjectivity.

The Distributed Self

Mixed media interactive system: silicone, infrared sensing, motorized breathing components, resin, electronic components

Right wall 右牆: 100 x 32 x 12 cm

Center floor 中間地面: 130 x 42 x 110 cm

"The Distributed Self" is a mixed-media installation combining AI dialogue experiments, biomorphic structures, and technological materials to explore the distributed and unstable nature of identity in the digital age. Originating from ongoing conversations between the artist and an AI-generated version of the self, the work reflects on posthumanism, cyborg theory, and human–technology symbiosis. Using silicone, 3D printing, mechanical elements, and soft materials, the installation constructs a hybrid body situated between organism, machine, and network. The work examines how contemporary subjectivity is continuously reshaped through algorithms, memory, media systems, and technological mediation.

Shadows of Resilience 韧

2024

3D-printed nylon, photosensitive resin, food-grade silicone, adhesive

110 x 42.8 cm

‘Shadows of Resilience' is a sculptural work that merges experimental materials with a personal emotional narrative. Utilizing the contrast between the rigid structure of 3D-printed nylon and the soft tactility of food-grade silicone, the piece explores the profound relationship between resilience and fragility through interlaced folds and smooth surfaces. Using the texture of life as a metaphor, it depicts the reshaping of emotion, pain, and identity under external pressures. The work invites the audience to reconsider how the “self,” formed within societal contexts, coexists with and contends against reality, finding personal answers within the dialectic of strength and shadow.

Desire of Touch

2025

Acrylic on canvas, wax, ribbon

Set of 8: 15 x 15 cm each

This work consists of 8 miniature canvases depicting skin textures—scars, bruises, and tooth marks—traces usually associated with violence. However, from the artist’s perspective, these marks symbolise a deeply private intimacy. Touching a partner's scars is not a sensation of pain, but an encounter with their past and the trust formed through vulnerability. Each canvas is coated in a layer of wax, as if sealing this intimacy. The wax surface appears soft yet remains untouchable, keeping desire at the boundary and creating a “forbidden tenderness” that is both protected and concealed. The entire work serves as a “body archive,” documenting how emotion and desire settle on the skin to be perceived and preserved between two people.

Dialogue:On the Edges of Self and System

 2025

Single-channel performance video and textual archive (dual interview transcripts)

7 minutes

This work shifts the focus from the physical body to the generative mechanisms of language and subjectivity. It unfolds as a dual interview between the artist and an AI-generated version of the “self.” Answering the same set of identity-focused questions, the juxtaposition of these two voices reveals the tension between authenticity and performance, and between self-expression and algorithmic mapping. Within this mirrored dialogue, a central question emerges: in an age of high technological intervention, which version of the “I” is closer to the truth? Or is “truth” itself merely an illusion constructed through machine echoes and algorithmic patterns? The work leads the audience to contemplate the edges of subjectivity in the digital era.
