So Cheuk Yiu
蘇綽瑤

She is a Hong Kong-based oil painter whose practice is a gamble with the inner self and a persistent exploration of the boundaries of human cognition. She moves fluidly between figuration and abstraction, capturing vivid, tangible sensations through impromptu colors, textures, and lines. 

 

Her oil paintings are often in large scale, as she relishes the physicality of painting with her entire body, pushing the limits of her own form through sweeping brushstrokes. She is obsessed with observing the human bodynot just its overall contours, but also the delicate textures of fingertips and nailsreading the most authentic state of life in every inch of skin and line. 

 

Inspiration stems from daily observationsthe casual postures of those around her, fleeting moments of captured bodiesall serve as her starting points. She never seeks perfect realistic replication; instead, she cares deeply about the resonance between the real human body and the abstract soul in those fleeting instant moments. With wild, unrestrained brushwork and bold, vivid colors, she translates the physical perception of the body into her own unique abstract vocabulary, letting the truth of the flesh collides and merges with the illusion of the spirit on the canvas.  

 

蘇綽瑤來香港,她的創作大多為油畫作品。她的作品是一場與內心世界的博弈,也是對人類認知邊界的持續探索。她游刃於具象與抽象之間,透過即興的色彩、紋理和線條捕捉鮮活而觸手可及的感受。

Rub 繭痕

The endless friction between brush and canvas 

resembles the callus formed by constant rubbing of the fingers, 

piling up layer by layer, settling slowly, and being erased again. 

 

In unending repetition, brushstrokes turn into calluses, 

allowing traces to remain engraved upon the flesh. 

 

畫筆與畫布之間不斷的磨擦; 

如同指間往復摩挲而生出的繭痕, 

層層堆疊、慢慢沉澱、又反覆抹去。 

 

筆觸在無盡來回中結成繭痕, 

讓痕跡得以留存於肉身之上。

我希望觀者先是對抽象的畫面產生不同聯想,然後能在畫面中找到具象的邏輯。這幅《心跳》表達出我對人體的抽象轉換,當觀眾近距離觀賞時,能看到一堆抽象的線條和色塊;但當觀眾遠距離觀賞並配合畫題去猜測,就能辨別到這幅畫的本體來自於手腕,這是我留給作品的一絲趣味性。

我以厚重、粗糲的筆觸,將人體塑造成充滿力量感和擠壓感的擁抱。透過抽象化肌肉的起伏、皮膚的褶皺,賦予了一種近乎痛苦的質感,但看似在自我擁抱或是兩者擁抱的形態下,又多一分安慰或平靜的感覺。在那些如淚水般垂落的顏料痕跡,既是情感的宣洩,也是時間在肉體上刻下的印記。

我使用矽膠製作逼真的手部模型,用氣泵裝置表現非自然的蠕動。在寫實與抽象中進行拉扯。
