ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Lillian Tse is a Hong Kong–based multidisciplinary artist working across painting and video. Their earlier works examined Internet and pop culture through humour and irony, from a painting of a pirated Tokusatsu show screenshot interrupted by gambling ads, to a miniature meme mocking lowresolution images, and a looping video where the artist removes themselves from family photographs. Evolving from these digitally infused commentaries, Lillian's recent video works turn inward, transforming gestures of harm or erasure into acts of creation and care. While retaining the wit and self-awareness of their earlier paintings, the current series expands into more intimate territory, using illusion and transformation to explore vulnerability, control, and emotional authenticity within mediated experience. Through this progression, Lillian continues to blur the boundary between satire and sincerity, reimagining how digital culture shapes personal and collective narratives.

It’s Time to Count Up Your Sins!

On pirated video websites, heroes preach justice to the audience while advertisements for gambling and pornography appear at the same screen. The clash between purity and corruption turns heroism into something unsettling and absurd, exposing the porous boundary between virtue, entertainment, and consumption.

It's Time to Count Up Your Sins! is a painting translated a screenshot of Kamen Rider W onto canvas, examining how images of righteousness are mediated, commodified, and hollowed out.

Damn! Don’t You Make It Even Smaller? X

At somewhere close to the centre of the canvas, a meme phrase is painted in an absurdly tiny size, while the rest of the space is left completely blank. The audience have to step closer or even squint just to see it. By playing with attention, scale, and humor, the work turns an internet phrase into a slow, awkward moment of looking.

5'11", looping

The work is a muted video composed of childhood family photos. The artist selects their own figure, deletes it, and lets the auto-fill function in the editing software imagines what remains. The video contemplates absence and memory quietly, wondering what might change if they had never existed.
