Wong Chun Sum

Sum Wong's creative practice is often inspired by the contrasts in everyday surroundings. By observing the interplay and fusion between organic and geometric, light and shadow, artificial and natural, Wong enthusiastically explores how different elements can collide and give rise to new possibilities.

Specialising in ceramics, Wong believes this material carries great potential and variability, enabling him to investigate and respond to diverse topics and phenomena. Wong actively experiments the materiality of ceramics, creating narratives through its physical properties and transformations.

Embracing the uncertainties of the making process, Wong often combines multiple materials within a single work to pursue unexpected results. Through his practice, he hopes to let the materials "speak for themselves" and create dialogues between one another.

For those who resemble us in appearance, yet fundamentally contradict — Do they count as ‘Us'?

For those who outwardly differ from us, yet resonate with us at the core — Do they count as ‘Us'?

For those who once been side by side with us, but have since drift apart in belonging — Do they still count as ‘Us'?

Yet, perhaps ‘Us' is no longer precise as a pronoun.

I do not even know how ‘Us' should be defined.

Habitat

wood, metal, linen

To face ourselves with honesty, first we have to hide in somewhere to filter out the irritations of the world.

This is a not an escape, but a step-back.

We still care, we still love.

But we must first heal and restore,

to find the strength to keep the journey going.

Nature’s Whisper

ceramics, video (8’24”)

Clay originates from the soil,

quiet and grounded in stillness.

Yet, when clay transforms into vessels,

returning to nature in another form,

a brand new dialogue happens.

"In somewhere deep inside, we are just like fire."

Taking this as the central proposition, Wong present a dialectic of inner energy. In Burning Hot, fire is both the primordial force of creation and the latent inevitability of collapse. This body of work does not seek to provide a binary answer, but instead emphasises on an exploration of “balance”— within the flames and temperature, continuously capturing the dynamic, tense criticality.
