I came across a small church, partly obscured by the modern skyscrapers of Hong Kong. Next to the church, a school brought life to the forest of concrete giants. Despite its low stature, All Saints' Cathedral stands out from the modern buildings, providing contrast in architectural style, era and intention.

Saint Teresa’s Church, a familiar landmark glimpsed daily from my bus window, had long captivated me with its quiet beauty, beckoning me to capture it on canvas. However, upon visiting the site, I discovered a frustrating reality. The church, hemmed in by a tangle of flyovers and houses, proved elusive to a complete view. Every angle I explored was thwarted by the intrusion of modern structures. Reluctantly, I accepted this obstructed perspective, recognizing it as a poignant reflection of Hong Kong itself – a city teeming with life, yet undeniably crowded. I tried to emphasize the open sky above, but even this couldn’t fully mask the fact that this characterful church was besieged by the very buildings essential to the city’s relentless progress.

One day, a fleeting glimpse from a bus window of the Kowloon Union Church sparked an unexpected artistic impulse. Impatient to reach my destination, I hopped off the bus at the next stop, drawn by an irresistible urge to examine the church more closely. Yet, a constant stream of traffic flowed between me and the building, never ceasing, not even for a moment. This relentless urban rhythm, so quintessentially Hong Kong, became the very essence of my painting.

Wandering through the city streets, I stumbled upon a beautiful Western-style building nestled amongst the towering skyscrapers. In stark contrast to the gray and imposing modern structures surrounding it, this building was bathed in sunlight, appearing to shimmer and gleam. Small and vibrantly colored, it was enveloped by the towering gray giants, much like the perspective in the painting, tucked away and hidden within the urban canyons.
