Wong Kwan Nam Shanae
Shanae, Wong Kwan Nam specializes in graphic design, illustration, and printmaking. She is deeply intrigued by the mysteries of individual psychology and the complex dynamics of human relationships. Her artworks act as a portal to her innermost emotions. She takes pleasure in using her daily experiences and stories into fundamental geometries and a palette of colours. For Shanae, art serves as a dual-purpose conduit: it is a means to share her narrative with others and a personal dialogue she engages in while she navigates the journey of observation, reflection, and creation.

Building upon the theme of communication, I have embarked on the creation of an artist book using screen printing, centred around the communication between myself and my grandfather. Titled ‘Grandpa Asks me Seven Questions a Day’ (2023), the artist book documents the seven questions my grandfather, who is afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, asks me daily at the same time and place. Due to his hearing and memory impairment, he often fails to hear my responses or forgets them entirely, resulting in a communication barrier. To bridge this gap, I have created a series of answer cards, each adorned with simple paper cut illustrations, to provide him with responses to his daily questions that show his care to me. Alongside the collection of cards, I have also depicted the specific places where he sits when asking the questions, offering an insight into his daily routine.

‘Daily Fragments' (2023) began with my decision to collect receipts as a means to record my daily life. Through observing the collected receipts, I discovered that these fragments, when combined, reflect the living pattern of myself. By illustrating patterns and images on the blank spaces on each receipt, these pieces of illustrations come together like puzzle pieces, symbolizing we can record our daily activities by glancing at seemingly insignificant and often overlooked objects like receipts.

Illustrated Animation Projected in Paper Box

“Life Journey”(2022) is a project combining illustration, animation, and installations together. This work employs the refractometry process with the image of a hot air balloon to metaphorically convey the message that growing up is a continuous journey of exploration, reflection, and experience. The animation portrays the stages of human life and the transformative journey from childhood to adulthood, highlighting the formative experiences that shape our present selves.
