76 pieces of silk. 76 poems. Each piece is treated with alum, becoming translucent and soft. On each, a poem from the Book of Odes is written in brush. The stroke responds to the poem’s emotion – tender verses light and flowing, angry ones bold and forceful, sad ones sparse and airy.
The fragments hang by transparent lines, surrounding the viewer wide degrees. Light passes through the silk; the calligraphy floats like shifting shadows. The audience walks close, looking up, turning around, and standing still.
Thousands of threads interweave into an invisible net. As the old poem says: “A heart like a double-silk net, with thousand upon thousand of knots.”
