In the East Asian family context, birth is often seen as the starting point of debt. A mother’s sacrifices become credit, while a child’s growth unfolds as an eternally unpayable debt. When love is precisely measured, the relationship evolves into a game of expectations and compensation.
The work presents the synchronous misalignment between my mother and I. We strive to draw near, yet miss each other again and again as if by fate. Each attempt at convergence becomes mutual abrasion. We can never meet each other’s expectations, only tug at one another painfully, over and over.

The House of John: A Living Archive, a collaborative video work by Cathy Wu and Fiona Wu created at the Dorich House Museum, challenges traditional archival methods by juxtaposing sculptor Dora Gordine’sinstitutional collection with the meticulously kept, personal residence of their 86-year-old landlord, John. This project re-envisions the private home as a “living archive,” exploring how personal experiences can be recognized and documented with the same significance as a museum.
