ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Yu Chak Kuen is an artist based in Hong Kong, deeply drawn to the complexities of human trauma as the core of his creative practice. Through media including sculpture, electronic media, and installations, he explores the raw, often unspoken wounds that shape our existence, transforming personal and collective pain into visual narratives that provoke reflection and dialogue.

His latest series, centered on the motif of scars, delves into how trauma evolves into profound expressions of humanity and progress. Scars, both literal and metaphorical, symbolise resiliencethe remnants of suffering that heal over time, revealing layers of vulnerability, strength, and transformation. In these works, he blends tactile forms with digital elements to mirror the interplay between physical scars and emotional ones, thus questioning how adversity fosters empathy, innovation, and societal advancement. For instance, installations featuring interactive projections on sculpted bodies invite viewers to confront their own histories, turning passive observation into active introspection.

This is a non-interactive sound and sculpture installation that seeks to extend the fleeting moment when individual scars transform into collective ones, capturing the profound empathy and goosebumps of shared vulnerability. Drawing from personal therapy experiences, translucent silicone sheets—UV-printed with merged scar imagery and pierced by thin acupuncture needles—float suspended in space, evoking the stinging warmth of needle connections. Looping audio, derived from spectrograms of scars, blends discordant stings into harmonious hums, immersing viewers passively in that indescribable second of fusion. Through this multi-sensory archive, the work reframes pain as a bridge to universal resilience, inviting quiet reflection on how scars unite us.
